Understanding What The Non 12 Step Rehab Programs Are Not

by on Oct.05, 2011, under Health and Fitness

You may be on the lookout for an effective recovery program for someone who has been addicted to drugs and are now suffering from the effects of this addiction. Or it may be for you. Regardless, when you choose a drug rehab program, it is important that you understand what’s in it for you before you decide on treatment. To know what the non 12 step rehab programs are, it would help to find out what they are not, especially since these programs intend to defy the principles of the 12 step recovery program that contribute to its failure. You cannot expect a non 12 drug rehab to incorporate group therapy sessions as these have been known to initiate more problems like an increased desire to use drugs again after the meeting.

In addition the non 12 step programs do not rely on heavy indoctrination, as opposed to a 12 step rehab that tries to instill in the minds of the drug-dependent that they have a disease and are defenseless against addiction and will have to accept that it will be a permanent part of their lives. Many successful non 12 step rehabs defy this. Instead these programs work on empowering former addicts to rule over their addiction. While this may entail a long and hard process, with the right approach, long term sobriety is possible. There is no reason to believe that once you are an addict, you will always be that way. Life allows U-turns for those who are willing to take them.
