The Box Office Space ● July 31st – Aug. 2nd, 2009!
A Look At The Weekend’s Winners And Losers!

The Box Office SpaceHey folks, Bobert here. This past weekend at the movies was one of the lowest attended in recent memory, resulting in a nearly 20% drop from last year during the same period. So while the Summer started off with a bang, with a lot of analysts saying it would in fact beat last Summer’s total tally, the sharp attendance drop in recent weeks has put it currently on par with Summer 2008. Judd Apatow’s latest, FUNNY PEOPLE, didn’t help matters as it was seemingly booed off stage with a lowly take of $23.4 Million. Funnymen Adam Sandler and Seth Rogan (who had a huge comedic hit around the same time last Summer with PINEAPPLE EXPRESS) just couldn’t get audiences into theater seats, apparently due to poor reviews and the impression that FUNNY PEOPLE was going to be one of those serious downer flicks that Sandler occasionally does. HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE held onto 2nd place with $17.7 Million, while G-FORCE tumbled to the 3rd spot with $17 Million. THE UGLY TRUTH also experienced a significant drop, ending up in 4th place with only $13 Million. Another new kids flick, the Sci-Fi Comedy ALIENS IN THE ATTIC, experienced a lackluster premiere with a meager $7.8 Million to round out the top 5. THE COLLECTOR, the small Horror flick getting raves from fans of the genre, premiered out of the top 10 and landed in 11th with $3.6 Million. Go beyond the break for the rest of the weekend’s box office results…

  1. Funny People underperformed as expected. That said, I’m seeing it again tonight at the drive ins. I’ll be curious about other people’s take of the film will be.
