Rounding Up The Week’s Notable Movie News Items!

JONES’ FOLLOW UP TO MOON WILL BE SET IN BLADE RUNNER FURNISHINGS…
Duncan Jones, director of the heavily buzzed Sam Rockwell flick Moon (arriving June 12th), will stay within the realm of sci-fi with his follow up which will A) Take place in the same universe as Blade Runner and B) remain in the same continuity of Moon. Not being the biggest fan of Blade Runner, I’m not completely dazzled/excited about this prospect. That said I know I’m in the minority as far as my feeling on that flick goes. Could be interesting…

THE ROAD FINALLY GETS A NEW RELEASE DATE (OCTOBER 16TH)…
I’ve never anticipated a post apocalyptic film as much as I have this one. In fact, I’ve never looked forward to any post apocalyptic film prior to The Road, based on Cormac McCarthy’s beloved novel with director John Hillcoat (The Proposition), ever. Then those fat fucks the Weinsteins decided to delay it so they can push The Reader instead. Now the film has finally found a new date…October 16th, which is almost a year from the prior date. Let’s hope it sticks…

BRONSON’S ‘THE MECHANIC’ REMAKE WILL STAR JASON STATHAM…
Charlie Bronson’s good starring vehicles are few and far between, but The Mechanic was always one of his most servicable. Now it gets in line along with the dozens of other upcoming remakes, this one with Statham in the starring role. I think I can officially say that I’m sick of this guy. I don’t care how many dudes declare him their man crush, Statham is a one note pony that makes far too many bad movies than good. There is no reason this one will be any different.

DEADPOOL SPINOFF MOVIE CONFIRMED…
I have not seen X-Men Origins: Wolverine (or plan to), but apparently Ryan Reynolds pulls off a decent Deadpool in the short amount of time he’s seen. Now with that movie not outright flopping, a Deadpool movie has been confirmed, to the apparent excitement of Reynolds. I for one have never cared much for Reynolds. I always felt he was a poor man’s Jason Lee, but fortunately Lee decided to pursue TV so now Reynolds is free and clear doing his warmed over snarky rascal schtick. Anywho, ladies like him so I’ll just go fuck myself…

GREEN LANTERN WILL MOST LIKELY BE BRADLEY COOPER…
It has all but been confirmed that actor Bradley Cooper will be donning the green ring to thwart baddies in the Green Lantern movie. If the name escapes you that’s fine. He’s had small roles in the The Wedding Crashers and this year’s He’s Just Not That Into You, and a starring role in the little seen Clive Barker horrorfest MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN. He will next be seen in The Hangover, which is receiving mammoth buzz at the moment. I always liked the idea of Bruce Campbell in the role, but that occured to me over a decade ago. Actually, I’d still take him over Cooper.

VIN DIESEL’S WHEELMAN IS GETTING THE BIG SCREEN TREATMENT…
This is another tidbit I would of completely would of overlooked if I didn’t withness the folks over at the “joystix” side of this site playing the game. It looks like Vin Diesel will be in brooding Vin Diesel mode here in the adaptation of a subpar video game which in turn will become a subpar movie (or worse). Here’s another actor dudes like that I fail to see the appeal. His best work is still The Iron Giant! There! I said it…

HAROLD AND KUMAR WANT TO SPEND CHRISTMAS WITH YOU!
It has been announced that Warner Brothers is giving the green light to a third Harold an Kumar movie (to the delight of a couple peeps I know). Keep in mind though, nor Kal Penn or John Cho have signed on. So is it possible that there could be a new cast especially since Penn now works for Obama doing important stuff (in theory)? The idea of a Harold and Kumar movie without either seems ill-fated at best. To be continued…

KEANU REEVES SLATED TO PLAY DR. JEKYL/MR. HYDE. WHOAAA!
In certainly the most interesting bit of casting for the week, Keanu Reeves is fingered for the role of literature’s most infamous bipolar. This will be a modern retelling of the classic Robert Lewis Stevenson book. To add a bit of optimism, Academy award nominated screenwriter Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road) is at the helm. I’m not quite sure what to make of the casting of Reeves, but put it this way: I like him better than Statham or Diesel.

IT WAS INEVITABLE… A FUCKING FAMILY GUY MOVIE…
Here’s something that I’m absolutely alone with my hatred on. Seth MacFarlane has confirmed that there will be a Family Guy movie. I don’t understand why this damn show fails to ellicit even a chorkle from me, but it does. The idea of a Family Guy movie is not remotely intriguing, but MacFarlane is wise to strike while the iron is hot. I would be interested to see how people look back at this show in ten years. Boy that was a lot of solidary setences.

RIP CAPTAIN CHAOS. IF THERE’S A HEAVEN, DOM’S UP THERE COOKING…
The lovable jovial star of many a Mel Brooks movie, Dom DeLuise has left this mortal coil at age 76. I myself will always remember him as Burt Reynold’s buddy in the Cannonball Run films and the voice of Jeremy and Tiger in the animated flicks Secret of NIMH and American Tail respectively. After his career started to subside, he started a lucrative career of writing cook and childrens books. No books on cooking children however. He also gave the world Peter DeLuise of 21 Jump Street fame. How can we keep on living now you’re gone Dom? Dom damnit Dom!!! I’ll miss your fat ass!
….and other notable Movie News Blips this week…
Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Barbarella’ Adaptation Is Dead
Hugh Jackman Developing ‘Wolverine’ Sequel, Japan Storyline Possible
Brett Ratner No Longer Directing ‘Conan’ Remake
Ken Watanabe joins Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception’

…or maybe Jason Lee is the poor man’s Ryan Reynolds.
Glad to say I only saw the first Transporter. I can live my live without ever seeing a Statham testosterone flick.
