A Look At The Weekend’s Winners And Losers!
Hey everybody! Sorry about the lack of a breakdown of this weekend’s releases. I was more or less out of town and nowhere near a computer for three days. Fortunately, I’m able to still give you the Box Office Space and I’m amused to report that after seven long weeks at the top of the charts, Avatar got dropped by a horrid little chick flick. Yes, it would appear that everybody underestimated and dismissed the appeal of the Nicholas Sparks pedigree (me included). Dear John easily vanquished the dragon known as Avatar, raking in an impressive 32 million dollars, nearly 10 million more that James Cameron’s juggernaut. Yup, it wasn’t even close. As for all the other films, go beyond the break to see how they have fared…
Even though Avatar got “humbled”, it still easily managed to grab 23 million dollars in its eight week. That’s pretty damn impressive. The other major release of the weekend was Pierre Morel’s follow-up to last year’s taken, From Paris with Love. That movie took in a paltry 8 million dollars. It looks like lightning will not strike twice for the French director. Meanwhile, Mel Gibson’s comeback Edge of Darkness is proving to be a bust, dropping nearly 60 percent in its second week, landing in the fourth position. I guess word of mouth has been less than kind. Rounding out the top five is that silly Tooth Fairy movie. I guess the choices for kids out there right now are few and far between.
When in Rome drops out of the top five to number six, a final gross of 30 million should be all it does. The Book of Eli continues its slow drop to number seven, though it did manage to make back its budget this weekend. Yay for that I guess. With the Oscar nominations announced, a handful of movies expanded to more theaters. Crazy Heart, the celebrated Jeff Bridges film, made the biggest jump leaping to the eighth spot with a three and a half million take. Adding nearly 600 more screens will do that for a film. Oscar hopefuls An Education, A Single Man and Precious (among others) also saw a jump. Not seeing a jump for obvious reasons, Legion fell to nine, while Sherlock Holmes rounds out the top ten at number ten.
Next week we have wolves, lightning and valentines. Sounds like a great threesome to me. Until then…
