The Box Office Space ● January 22nd – 24th, 2010!
A Look At The Weekend’s Winners And Losers!

Well…. at least I was right about Avatar. Another weekend has passed and another astute prediction by me tattered and bruised. Of course, Avatar remained in the top spot for the sixth straight week taking in a hefty 36 million bucks. This movie has only dropped fifteen percent so I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that we have a new all time highest grossing champion. Yipee? Sure, why not? This whole Titanic déjà vu thing is just too weird for words at this point. I’m halfway expecting Lost in Space to get re-released so something can topple this monolith. I wonder how long Cameron is going to take to make his next film. And as I contemplate that, go beyond the break to see the rest of the standings…

Not that the fans of Avatar noticed, but there were three new releases this week. The highest debut of those was Legion, the attacking angel flick that scored a cool 18 million. With a budget of merely 26 million, it’s safe to say this movie will break even and then some. The Book of Eli fell to number two dropping just under 50 percent. This film will ultimately result in a respectable (if unspectacular) final gross. The Rock’s shitty kid’s movie THE TOOTH FAIRY underperformed (in my eyes) grabbing the fourth position with nearly 15 million in ticket sales. The Game Plan this isn’t. In a mild surprise, The Lovely Bones has managed to hang around a while longer, splashing down at five.

Robert Downey Jr. is no doubt happy about the success of Sherlock Holmes. It should get to 200 million by the end of next week. It’s at six. Extraordinary Measures bit the big one, debuting in seventh, while that other Christmas holdout Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel crashes down at number eight. Meryl Streep meanwhile won’t go away. It’s Complicated is still hanging around. This week it’s number nine. Rounding out the top ten is Jackie Chan’s flop, The Spy Next Door. Hopefully, with the underperformances of this and The Tooth Fairy, Hollywood will stop making dumb kid’s films based on shitty premises. I seriously doubt it too.

Next week Mel Gibson wants revenge! Until then…
