Ladies and Gentleman, I’m proud to present — the 50th episode of The FnJ Podcast! Obviously this is already a week old, but I wanted the announcement post to be eventful nonetheless. And quite an eventful show we had! Not only was our SuperFan Melissa there to show off her Eva Mendez skirt, our first (and probably only) call-in show featured a number of guests, including one that threatened the life of our dear friend Metaldy! The caller even sent the staff a dead bird as proof of his intentions! Don’t believe me? Check out the pics beyond the break for photographic evidence! Episode 51 is also up, and with a title like “Anal-Eaze”, how could you not want to listen to it right away?! To further celebrate our 50th milestone, we’ve switched from the Video Games category on iTunes to straight-up Comedy! So remember to subscribe to the FnJ Podcast on the iTunes Store and leave us your thoughts and comments, we love the attention as you know! We also have a new home at Mevio.com, so you can find us there too! (more…)

What’s up everybody? It’s McJeffrey here to fill all you lovely people in on what is hitting theaters near you this weekend. I apologize for the two week hiatus. I was dealing with personal issues (week one) and a lack of anything coming out (week two). Hopefully, that’s behind me. Before I get into the major releases, let’s see what opens up in my beloved city of Sacramento. At The Tower Theatre, Michael Haneke’s Oscar nominated foreign film The White Ribbon finally opens. After the American version of Funny Games, I’ve been intrigued what Haneke’s next move was going to be. This one seems to be a lot more celebrated. Over at The Crest you can check out the Oscar nominated short films (animated and live action). Give them a whirl and you can feel hell of smart when those nominations are rolled out a week from Sunday. Everyone else will be in the bathroom. OK, onto the major releases! Go beyond the break to discover what they are… (more…)

Welcome to another edition of NEW RELEASE TUESDAY on a Wednesday! While this week will find me mostly engaged with the PS3 game HEAVY RAIN, its definitely not a slim week in the home video department. Don’t get it twisted — Its definitely another week filled with worthy additions to any Hi-Def enthusiast’s Blu-ray collection. There’s only one classic (and I use that term rather loosely) getting the shiny blu disc upgrade, and I think that has more to do with a certain remake showing up in theaters this week than the worthiness of said classic. Attention cinephiles — fans of unconventional comedies should look no further than this week’s Pick for their dose of anti-Hollywood fare. We have at least one under-appreciated 2009 flick getting a second chance on hi-def, and another DC Universe adventure gets the DTV treatment. Go beyond the break to see all that and more… (more…)

Since 1997, I have taken it upon myself to drag my mom to every film that gets nominated for Best Picture by the Academy Awards. That first year we saw Good Will Hunting, As Good as it Gets, L.A. Confidential, The Full Monty and Titanic. My favorite was Confidential. She loved As Good as it Gets. Of course, Titanic won. This quickly became a tradition for us and a fine way to spend quality time yelling at each other based on the other person’s taste. She hated American Beauty, Moulin Rouge and Babel (three films I very much enjoyed). She also watched No Country for Old Men virtually from a slit between her fingers. She was that freaked out. However every once in a while, she surprises me. She enjoyed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, There Will Be Blood and Gangs of New York, three films I would assume she would despise. She loved Life is Beautiful, Juno and Finding Neverland, three films that she probably never would have seen unless we did this silly annual journey. This year, with the number of eligible nominees doubled from five to ten we had our work cut out for us. Fortunately, half of the films are available on DVD so our movie going budget stays the same at five films. Go beyond the break for our thoughts on the last two films viewed… (more…)

Hi folks! Paramount’s gamble to move Shutter Island from a fall release to spring paid off in spades. Shutter Island did outstanding business this weekend pulling in 40 million dollars. The psychological thriller directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio looks to be the fourth straight successful collaboration for the two of them. As for everything else, go beyond the break for the breakdown… (more…)

Martin Scorsese has apparently found his muse with Leonardo DiCaprio. For his last four feature films, he has placed DiCaprio in the lead (or co-lead) of each production. From historical and crime dramas to biopics, DiCaprio has readily allowed Scorsese to use him the way De Niro did all those years ago. After four films I have to say without a twinge of doubt that Leonardo is no De Niro. Half of the time, it still seems to me that he’s playing dress up. That may not be his fault but I have to admit that it hard for me to get past his boyish good looks, especially when he plays anything that requires him to show some balls (not literally)… (more…)

Welcome to NEW RELEASE TUESDAY on a Wednesday! Quit your whining and read on! This week is the first where I’ve actually not seen any of the new releases (or at least until last night…), so my pick of the week is simply a gut reaction. I’m pretty sure an animated flick about one of the most popular video game franchises in history is a safe bet. There’s the usual collection of new stuff on the shiny blu disc and an assortment of classics being re-released in Hi-Def (even a rare Blu-ray double-dip!), and three (count’em — THREE) Criterion Blu-ray offerings! The movie gods smile upon us this day my friends. Go beyond the break to see all that and more… (more…)

Mass Effect 2 was one of the most ambitious titles of it’s time, but failed in it’s execution of certain elements. Is Mass Effect 2 more Star Wars, or Space Balls? Go beyond the break to find out… (more…)

Hey everybody! Due to personal reasons, I was unable to get This Week at the Movies out in time this weekend. Two straight weeks is unacceptable and I will make a more concerted effort to keep on schedule from this point on. I can’t make Bobert make me look bad after all. Anywho, there were three major releases this week and all did some pretty solid business. The biggest of the three however was the all star romantic romp Valentine’s Day which walked away with well over 50 million dollars! Good gravy! I guess nobody wanted to do anything too creative this Valentine’s Day weekend. For the rest of the top ten go beyond the break to read more….. (more…)
