This Last Week@The Movies: SURROGATES, FAME, & More!
A Quick Look At This Last Weekend’s Cinematic Offerings!

A revealing scene in SURROGATESHiya folks, Bobert here with another edition of Last Week@The Movies! This is going to be short one, so let’s jump right into whats showing up here in the state’s capital. The only new thing of interest is at The Tower Theatre, and its BRIGHT STAR. The latest from Palme d’Or award winner Jane Campion, the film is a dramatic romance based on the last three years of famed poet John Keats. It focuses on the relationship between Keats and his muse, a young woman by the name of Fanny Brawne (quit snickering!). I’m not really one for these type of dry period dramas, but McJeffrey got a chance to see the flick last week, so hopefully we’ll get a review real soon. In the meantime, let’s see what else is new on the big screen nationally… (more…)

The Box Office Space ● September 18th – 20th, 2009!
A Look At The Weekend’s Winners And Losers!

The Box Office SpaceThe Box Office enjoyed a better turnout this weekend than the same weekend last year, thanks to a strong premiere for CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, winning the top spot by a rather large margin with over $30 Million. THE INFORMANT! had to settle for 2nd, making a modest $10 Million its first weekend out. Tyler Perry’s latest, I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF, fell a couple of spots to third with $9 Million. The RomCom LOVE HAPPENS happened into 4th place with a disappointing (for the studios, expected and appreciated by me) $8 Million, but still managed to do better than the embattled JENNIFER’S BODY. The Teen Horror Comedy dropped into 5th place with a dismal $6 Million. Go beyond the break out to see the entirety of the weekend’s box office results… (more…)

This Last Week@The Movies: JENNIFER, INFORMANT, & More!
A Quick Look At This Last Weekend’s Cinematic Offerings!

Matt Damon in THE INFORMANT!Well another weekend of movies, another late entry for This Week@The Movies. At least you’re getting a passionate rant about one flick’s biased critical slamming, and then another a mini-review for another, so you’re getting something extra special for waiting. As far as what’s new locally in Sacramento, COLD SOULS makes its way over to The Crest Theatre. As mentioned in an earlier edition of This Week@The Movies, the Paul Giamatti flick has a premise that’s just too quirky to miss out on. On the other side of Downtown, we got THE BAADER MEINOF COMPLEX and SOUL POWER playing at The Tower theatre. The first is about a group of youthful revolutionaries in ’60s/’70s Germany that went too far, and the latter is a documentary chronicling the 3-day music festival (dubbed “Zaire 74″) that preceded the famed Rumble in the Jungle heavyweight boxing championship in 1974. Go beyond the break to see what’s in store for multiplex moviegoers everywhere… (more…)
