The Box Office Space ● August 28th – 30th, 2009!
A Look At The Weekend’s Winners And Losers!

The Box Office SpaceAugust and the Summer Movie Season ended with a scream over the weekend, as the box office experiencing a boost in receipts and the highest grossing ever for the time period. Apparently pitting two well-known and previously popular Horror franchises against one another really payed off. THE FINAL DESTINATION landed in first place with $28.3 Million, with much of that money coming from 3D showings of the latest in the nearly decade old franchise. INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS expectedly fell a spot but reined in an additional $20 Million for struggling movie studio The Weinstein Company. Quentin Tarantino’s WWII flick looks to become the auteur’s second biggest money maker after PULP FICTION. Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN II was the second Horror movie to premiere this week, and while it didn’t do as well as its competition, the second installment in the rebooted franchise wrestled up $17.4 Million and secured the 3rd position its first weekend out. The Weinstein Company was apparently pleased with the results, despite coming nowhere near to repeating the first remake’s opening business, and are already planning a 3D entry for a Rob Zombie-less HALLOWEEN III… (more…)

FlixnJoystix Presents: The Hollywood Junkyard!
Jon The Mick Rummages Through The Latest From Tinseltown!

The Hollywood Junkyard
Why do we keep honoring dead people that don’t deserve it? Michael Jackson, sure he had a lot of hits in the 80s and early 90s, but what has he done lately? It seems like only drugs and touching kids, but after he dies everyone overlooks how much of a scumbag he turned into and morns him. People really put the blinders on. And now DJ AM dies because of an overdose and everyone talks about how great of a man he was. Well I don’t think he was much of one. He survives a plane crash that killed most of the people on it, his family and friends are terrified that he won’t make it, and how does he repay them? He goes right back to drugs and kills himself. Way to go buddy. As for the rest of Hollywood… (more…)

This Week@The Movies: HALLOWEEN II, BIG FAN, & More!
A Quick Look At This Weekend’s Cinematic Offerings!

This Week@The Movies • August 28th, 2009Hey folks, Bobert here! Welcome to the unofficial last week of the Summer Movie Season! It’s been a long road filled with thrills and chills. Some of us are ecstatic that its come to an end, while others are already anticipating next year’s Blockbuster season. So on what note does Hollywood go out on in 2009? With hair-raising screams it would seem. The weekend is dominated by Horror films, and both are sequels. Yikes indeed. Things look a bit brighter over in the Limited Release section, but not by much since one features the rather bleak story of one pathetic little man. Why not go beyond the break to see what I’m talking about… (more…)

Fresh From Under The Sea To You — PONYO!
Tofu’s Dives Into Miyazaki’s Latest Animated Adventure!

Tofu's PONYO Movie Review
I fondly remember the first of Hayao Miyazaki’s films I had the pleasure of seeing. Now it really wasn’t that long ago as I caught the theatrical release of Princess Mononoke. A fine piece of cinema sullied only by the voice acting of a one Claire Danes, which in retrospect, really wasn’t that bad. This chance theatrical viewing of an “anime” changed my entire outlook on the genre. It also gave Miyazaki another fan in his undoubtedly countless throngs both here and in his native Japan, where there even exists a theme park dedicated to his works. When his latest effort Ponyo hit theatres I had the same trepidations that came along with the now long ago Mononoke, namely voice actors like Danes being thrown in there and mucking up the overall presentation. Let’s not start there however Ponyo is a beautiful story, lovingly crafted by Miyazaki and I wouldn’t want you all to get the wrong impression by griping about an actor cast in an American dub that was put out over a decade ago… (more…)

The Tsuj’s Game+Watch: Last Week Of August 2009!
A Look At The Week’s Notable Games: BATMAN, METROID, & More!

Tsuj's Game+Watch: Last Week of August 2009To a busy gamer with everyday responsibilities like work, friends, family, relationships, and writing for a video game website, time is a very precious commodity. It’s essential that we be picky when making purchasing decisions with our games, especially as we enter the busy Holiday season. This week show’s no mercy though as there is a surprisingly diverse selection of games releasing this week and a variety of gamers will find something to purchase and have a great time with. Me? I’m going to buy Batman: Arkham Asylum and I’m going to love the hell out of it. I loved it at E3 and I loved the recently released demo so this one is a must-buy. If I show the amount of discipline that I hope I do then that will be it for me, but temptation is strong this week and my willpower will be tested during one of the strongest release weeks of the Summer. Go beyond the break to see what’s coming out for the last week of August… (more…)
