New Release Tuesday!

Unfortunately, it seems the studios have chosen to keep Halloween Day big-release free. The one major DVD release this week (and coincidentally the only “Must-Have” of the week) actually opted to hit the streets on Monday Oct. 30th, rather than face the horror of trying to get the trick or treating masses to come out and pick it up in the stores. Anyway, read on below to find out which new release I’m talking about as well as this week’s honorable mentions!

Bobert’s 30 Days of Halloween Horror Continues!

Well Halloween is only a few hours away, and I already have plans set to go catch a Halloween night showing of KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE over at the local arthouse theater (The Crest Theatre on K Street to be exact). Hope everyone else has got a ghoulishly good time planned as well. In the meantime, enjoy the rest of my not-quite-30 Days of Halloween Horror celebration. Read on and be sure to chime in with your own 2 cents in the comments below!

The Box Office Check-Up!

The Jigsaw killer is showing no sign of slow-down as the third film in the Horror series opened to the biggest numbers yet for New Line Cinema’s newest franchise. SAW III continues the now annual tradition of a pre-Halloween release, and it has been paying off big time. In comparison, SAW II and the original made $31 Mil and $18 Mil respectively in their first weekends of release. Compounded with the relatively inexpensiveness of the SAW films, the studio is sure to see quite a profit. Because of this, it’s a forborne conclusion that New Line Cinema has already scheduled SAW IV for release next Halloween. THE DEPARTED continues to prove itself as filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s most successful flick, as it holds it’s grip on the #2 spot. Last week’s #1, THE PRESTIGE, fell two spots to 3rd place but looks to break even within a couple of weeks. Clint Eastwood’s FLAG OF OUR FATHERS continues to languish in theaters, with little critical praise to help its cause (like they did with initial slow-starters MYSTIC RIVER and MILLION DOLLAR BABY). This War flick may have to call for a retreat in the not-too-distant future. Check out the top ten chart below for details on the rest of this weekend’s winners and losers, and be sure to come back next time to find out who the next Box Office champ and chump will be!

Game News Bytes!

Hey folks, Bobert here! I know our GAME NEWS BYTES section has been lacking these days, but I’m going to try to do a weekly article at the end of every week collecting all the News Bytes and video game trailers I think are worth mentioning. Sure it won’t be breaking news by the time you see it here, but at least its a start at trying to do something on a regular basis. Let me know what you think! Click on the pic below for all the GAME NEWS BYTES from the week of 10/22/06!

This Week @the Movies!

It’s kinda sad that the only Horror film Hollywood has to offer the weekend before Halloween is the second sequel to a terribly mediocre franchise. The rest of this weekend’s new releases squarely fall into Oscar Bait type faire, which means the Fall/Winter Movie season has officially commenced! There are only two flicks among the choices below that are on my must-see list, and both are only being shown in select cities. To find out which ones I’m eyeing, and what I have to say about the other options, read on below!

The Movie Trailer & Poster Round-Up!

There’s quite a bit to see in today’s round-up. Now I know some of this stuff has been on the net for a good long time, but I wanted to include everything I’ve seen recently and that has got my curiosity piqued! Right below you’ll find the trailers for THE HOST, a South Korean import that disguises itself as a Creature Feature but hides a far more deeper film underneath, then there’s Guillermo Del Toro’s PAN’S LABYRINTH, a very dark-looking Adult Fairytale, and finally there’s the remake to George A. Romero’s classic Zombie flick DAY OF THE DEAD. The first two trailers look awesome, and I can’t wait for each respective flick. The DOTD trailer on the other hand looks like same old Zombie stuff, which is actually starting to wear pretty thin with me these days. Plus, this supposed “Remake” looks nothing like the original, aside from the strong Military presence both films possess. Just click on each pic to see each film’s trailer. And just below that are a few new posters for some upcoming flicks I’m looking forward to. Click the pic to get a bigger version of the poster. Enjoy!

This Week @the Movies!

Wow! What a great week to be a movie fan! We’ve got flicks from some of the biggest names in filmmaking. We’re talking about Christopher Nolan (BATMAN BEGINS, MEMENTO), Sofia Coppola (LOST IN TRANSLATION, VIRGIN SUICIDES), and Clint Eastwood (MILLION DOLLAR BABY, UNFORGIVEN). And what’s even better is that each offering is completely unique from the other, so it looks like I may be spending a lot of time at the theater this weekend. Read on for more on each flick pictured below!

Fox And Universal Say Goodbye To HALO!

In a stunning turn of events, 20th Century and Universal Pictures, the two studios that agreed to co-finance the film adaptation of Microsoft’s HALO video game, have abruptly pulled out of the project. This leaves executive producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh of LORD OF THE RINGS fame without financing or distribution. A ballooning budget (rumored to have been closing in on the $200 Mil mark) and an apparent lack of confidence in rookie feature film director Neill Blomkamp are being named the major culprits for Fox and Universal’s decision. Ken Kamins, Jackson and Walsh’s rep, was quick to address the reasons and speculations surrounding the Studios’ exit.
