The Box Office Space ● May 14th – 16th, 2010!
A Look At The Weekend’s Winners And Losers!

Another weekend is behind us and we are no worse for ware (I would assume). Iron Man 2 stayed strong enough to keep its spot atop of the charts even though it faltered close to sixty percent in its second week. Though the word of mouth has been mostly positive (by critics and the general public), the consensus remains that this film is not as good as the original. This may have caused a few stragglers who are on the fence to see it to stay put. At the same time, there doesn’t seem to be any urgency from people to give this film any repeat viewings. It will cross the 300 million mark with sheer will. Anything beyond that will be tough to manage. Meanwhile, there were three major releases that made various amounts of noise. Want to learn how they did?  Just go beyond the break… (more…)

A Look At The Weekend’s Winners And Losers!

You may not know it from staring outside at the moment but summer is here! Nothing proves that more than the performance of Iron Man 2 in its first weekend. The metal man pretty much decimated the competition with a gross of nearly 130 million dollars. That isn’t close to beating The Dark Knight’s record weekend, but it’s nothing to sneeze at either. That said, we are now in the midst of the summer movie season which will bring us one major release after another four the next three plus months. That means the stragglers of the spring will be dancing off the charts in due time. Speaking of those films, let’s go beyond the break and see how they did shall we… (more…)

A Look At The Weekend’s Winners And Losers!

Call it the calm before the storm if you will, but this last weekend gave us the last remnants of the spring movie season. So before we witness the Iron Man sequel lay waste to everything that came before it, let’s see how everything did in the last couple days. Well here’s a shocker. A Nightmare on Elm Street easily took the top spot with a 32 million dollar cash grab. I’m unsure how impressive that is seeing as unlike the Friday the 13th and Halloween reboots, Nightmare is a hedge more costly due to dream induced CG in comparison but as far as your garden variety horror flicks go, that weekend sum is acceptable. There is little doubt this thing is going to tumble hard next weekend, so I hope the folks at Platinum Dunes enjoy their small victory now. As for everything else, go beyond the break to take a gander at the results… (more…)

A Look At The Weekend’s Winners And Losers!

Well I got number one and five correct. After two weekends in a row where the number one film was too close to call (the result of which has made me look foolish on both weekends), there is finally a clear winner… and it’s the flick that has been in theaters for five weeks. Yes, How to Train Your Dragon has officially regained its top spot after a close battle last week with Kick-Ass. This time there’s just no contest. Dragon has now made more than its budget so here’s hoping that it starts pulling a decent enough profit from this point on. I’m not a fan of the movie but I am a big fan of word-of-mouth. It still remains the best advertisement money can’t buy. As for how everything else underplayed, go beyond the break to get into the know zone… (more…)

A Look At The Weekend’s Winners And Losers!

Well this may be the biggest box office surprise of the year. In its 4th week in release, How to Train Your Dragon reclaimed its spot at number one after stepping aside for Clash of the Titans for a pair of weeks. I’m pretty sure there is a precedent for this but for the life of me I can’t recall the last time a film took back the top spot after multiple weeks of gestation. Even though I’m apparently the only person not in love with this film I do have to tip my hat for how well it’s doing performance wise. I suppose word-of-mouth is still the best advertising after all. So where are Kick-Ass and that funeral movie? Go beyond the break to find out… (more…)

A Look At The Weekend’s Winners And Losers!

[Editor's note: In a display of either embarrassing incompetence or plain old dishonesty, 20th Century Fox's early estimates for their new Comedy DATE NIGHT proved to be inflated, with CLASH OF THE TITANS winning the weekend and retaining its spot at #1(It's $26.6M beat out DATE's still solid $25.2M). This invalidates McJeffrey's first sentence -- which is hilarious. That is all. - Bobert]

For the first time in I don’t recall how long, my predictions for this weekend’s top five were completely right. Allow me to bask in that for that for a second. OK, that was fun. It was a close race but Date Night succeeded in usurping Clash of the Titans from its thrown at the top of the box office. Date Night grabbed a sturdy 27 million, just around one million more than Clash made. Seeing as you have to include the price of 3D in the equation, it was clear Date Night most certainly had more spectators. I’ll be checking this out sometime this week so hopefully you’ll get a review soon. As for everything else, go beyond the break to see the results… (more…)

A Look At The Weekend’s Winners And Losers!

Well the Kraken was released and the people came. Clash of the Titans easily nabbed the top spot with a tally of over 60 million. That is about twenty million less than I prognosticated, but it’s still a decent take. One would wonder how this movie would of ultimately done if they released it in 2D as it was intended. I’m not sure about the word-of-mouth on this one (Bobert called it a “missed opportunity”), but I’m going to go out on a limb and say this movie doesn’t have legs. To see a couple more new releases that don’t have legs either, by all means go beyond the break… (more…)

A Look At The Weekend’s Winners And Losers!

Alice in Wonderland’s reign at the top of the box office charts has come to an end. Dreamworks latest computer animated flick How to Train Your Dragon has vanquished Alice with a decent 43 million dollar gross. Critics have been exceptionally kind to this movie as has early word-of-mouth by audiences. Dragon should be chilling in the top ten for quite a spell, or at least until the summer movie season officially starts. That’s a month away and I couldn’t be more relieved. As for all the other flicks, go beyond the break to see how they fared… (more…)

A Look At The Weekend’s Winners And Losers!

As expected, Alice in Wonderland took the box office crown for the third straight week slipping 45 percent with a pull of over 34 million this weekend. Apparently, people really like the aesthetic of Burton’s warped vision of the Lewis Caroll classic because there is nothing in the writing worth a damn. Are we as Americans that placated by pretty pictures? Don’t answer that. I suppose I just have to look at the highest grossing film of all time to verify that query. OK, enough of my bitching. Go beyond the break to see how everything else did… (more…)

A Look At The Weekend’s Winners And Losers!

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Alice in Wonderland handedly vanquished four new movies this weekend pulling in a hearty 62 million. I guess word-or-mouth hasn’t been overtly toxic. I’m speculating that Alice’s reign will probably last one more week before it tackles the How to Train Your Dragon and Hot Tub Time Machine one-two punch. Any way you slice it, this flick will inevitably become Tim Burton’s biggest moneymaker. I don’t know whether to cheer or weep. As for how everything else did this weekend, go beyond the break to find out… (more…)
