Hey there everybody! Another week into what Bobert has referred to as “The Summer of Suck!” This weekend we have four (count them) four major releases and there’s a distinct possibility that a couple of them are not horrible. But before we get into that rigmarole, let’s gaze over at the new smaller releases that are currently being held captive in Sacramento shall we? It appears we only have one movie to speak on and it’s Ajami, a film about a revenge killing that takes place in Tel Aviv in a Pulp Fiction jumbled narration fashion. I hear it’s pretty great. Hopefully, I’ll get around to checking it out soon. OK, so that’s out of the way lets get into the meat of the week. It’s just beyond the break… (more…)

Hey everybody! We are week three into the summer movie season and so far so good. This week we have everyone’s favorite green ogre back in theaters along with the first SNL movie in about a decade. By the time this gets posted, I would have already seen both films. Yay for me! Before we get into all that craziness though lets see what new delights are awaiting us in the Sacramento art film district shall we? Over at both Century Ethan and Century Folsom we have Kites a Bollywood spectacle involving budding love, Mexican deserts, and kites! Sounds about as fun as any Bollywood film I hear about. At The Crest you have Vincere, a political melodrama with Mussolini as one of the main characters. On top of that, we have Princess Kaiulani: a true story about some woman who was the princess of Hawaii or something. Actually, that Bollywood flick isn’t sounding so bad after all. Everything else is beyond the break… (more…)

Hello film fans! I’m back with you with another delicious round of potential summer blockbusters to feast on. Yes the nourishment of summer is here! This week we have three wide releases to speak on and absolutely nothing limited. I’m going to make a safe assumption that a lot of smaller movies are going to be hanging back for the next couple of months while the Hollywood machine does its thing. That said there are a couple options for the Sac Town posse looking to see something outside of your basic multiplex fare. Over at The Crest we have A Town Called Panic which is a French film that revolve around the adventures of a cowboy, indian and horse. Did I mention they are all toys… and no I’m not talking about some Toy Story stylings here? This is a stop motion film using some quaint figurines. It doesn’t look like anything I’ve ever seen before. Hopefully, I’ll find time to watch it. Over at the Tower Theatre the Best Foreign Film Oscar winner The Secret in Their Eyes makes an appearance. I hear good things but does it have any crazy French toys in it? Didn’t think so! As for the big releases, go beyond the break to read on… (more…)

Well it has begun! The summer movie season is underway and that means we have four months worth of the loudest, bombastic and visually resplendent films you can ask for in 2010. With any hope, my Top 20 Most Anticipated Films of the Summer will be up soon so you can get a gander what is coming out and what I’m interested in catching. Generally this would the time where I inform you on what smaller releases are heading to Sacramento. Alas, nothing new this week. That’s not to say that there isn’t one giant release making its way to a theater near you this week. Please go beyond the break to find out what it is. I bet you have no clue… (more…)

It’s summer again. Well, technically it isn’t but don’t tell the bean counters over at the movie studios this. As far as they’re concerned there are only three seasons and winter is not one of them. For the next four months, we the movie going public will be bombarded with a symphony of big films that will dazzle, entertain and in all likelihood rot a few brain cells. Before you now are the top twenty most anticipated films of the season as far as I’m concerned. A lot of the usual suspects are here with more than a dollop of smaller films that made me raise an eyebrow or two. Overall, this summer seems to have more original films but those are the ones that will most likely tank (with a few exceptions). But enough with my ramblings already right? Let’s get to it… (more…)

Greetings earth people! We have a rather truncated episode of This Week at the Movies for you this go around but those tiny morsels I’m delivering are no less filling than the grande style I give you every week. What the hell am I talking about? Anyway, before I blind you with the awesome wide releases lets take a gander at what is coming to town nearby style. Over at the IMAX Esquire we have the new space doc Hubble 3D which has gotten its usual raves and acclimations. IMAX has got the ocean and space docs pretty much perfected at this point. This one is sure to dazzle as well. Also we have Benjamin Bratt playing a Latino street tough in Le Mission which is chilling like a villain over at The Crest and Regal Natomas. I’ve never heard of this one which is probably not a great sign. I could be wrong though. Everything else is where I left it… and that’s beyond the break… (more…)

What’s up my peeps? Another weekend is here and we’re all filled with cheer… or not. We’ve got some new releases right out of the oven and piping hot for you to sink your teeth into, but as always let’s take a quick look at what is opening in and around SacTown shall we? Well the two other releases of note this week are playing at The Crest. Both films have gotten a lot of good ink in the last few months. They are The Eclipse (about a recent widower with kids who sees ghosts) and The Art of the Steal (a doc about a tug-of-war over the acquisition of over a billion dollars worth of paintings). If I’m not too broke by this weekend, I’ll try to catch these. As for everything else, do yourself a favor and go beyond the break will ya… (more…)

Hola friends of cinema! It’s McJeffrey here to tell you about all the goodies that are coming to a theatre near you this week. There’s so much good stuff you will shit yourself with excrement — er, I mean excitement. Where to start? How about what is showing up in smaller releases this weekend? Sure, why not! If you take a trip out to Roseville (Roseville Century that is) you can witness Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning acting like rock and roll bitches in The Runaways. Over at the Tower Theatre, you have The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opening and over at The Crest you have Fish Tank. Both films have gotten strong notices and I will attempt to check them out (if I can get my funds straightened out). Is there anything else? Well go beyond the break to find out… (more…)

What’s going down movie fans? I was recovering from my trip to Austin Texas last week so I apologize for not putting out last week’s addition of This Week@the Movies but I’m back now with a full head of steam. Of course, before we get into the major releases I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the smaller openings this week in my beloved Sacramento! Over at The Crest you can now catch the Oscar nominee for Best Documentary THE MOST DANGEROUS MAN IN AMERICA: DANIEL ELLSBERG AND THE PENTAGON PAPERS. Ellsberg was a former US military analyst who was infamous for releasing the Pentagon Papers which was a top secret Pentagon study of US decision-making about the Vietnam War. This could be interesting. Of course, it would be more interesting if it was shot in beautiful 3D!! DO we have any movies like that this week? You betcha! Go beyond the break to find out more… (more…)

Hi movie fanatics! It’s that time again where are tell you about all the fine films you should treat yourself to this weekend. We have three major releases to speak on but before that let’s see what Sac Town has got for us in the way of theatrical excellence. Why it’s a documentary on starving people!! The End of Poverty (?) opens this weekend at The Crest. This is yet another doc telling us how big business is ruining the world. That may be true, but I think I’ve officially had an assfull of the incendiary documentaries about evil corporate America. These films tend to just preach to the choir and I for one am a little tired of spending my hard earned government cheese seeing them. So what am I seeing this week? Who knows? But go beyond the break to see my options… (more…)
